Am I in Preschool?
About a year ago I recently worked for a large well-known alarm response company. I took the job because it was the only job available immediately in that city.

I started work after a week of training. On the first day out of training I walked out on the call center floor and I was approached by a supervisor. She took me aside and told me how things work on the floor.

She begin by telling me about the clever point system they devised to boost employee moral and production. Each morning the supervisors would come around and put a number of gold stars on one’s desk to signify that they are doing well. At the end of the week the points will be tallied and the most popular or closest to the supervisor always wins.

One can earn gold star/fish points by: • Sitting at one’s desk and do not talk to the person next to you unless it is business • Sitting at one’s desk and not taking extra brakes. • Speaking correctly on the phone • Coming to work on time • Leaving a clean desk • Not leaving work before your schedule time

And the list goes on and on. This point system did not boost my moral, in fact, it pissed me off. Every point (gold star/fish, whatever) I received I felt more like i was in preschool and they were watching my every move.
